3,000 workers displaced by El Niño get work from DOLE

KORONADAL CITY, South Cotabato, Apr. 12 (PIA) – Some 3,067 individuals  affected El Niño in  North Cotabato  are  given  temporary job courtesy of the Department of Labor and Employment.

These  unemployed and  underemployed workers were   given  income-generating  jobs  through the DOLE Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa ating Disadvantaged/Displaced Workers (DOLE-TUPAD)

DOLE  12, told Philippine Information Agency  12,  that  these  marginalized workers were  deployed to their  respective barangays  “to assist in the social, economic and agroforestry community projects such as repair and/or improvements of common public facilities, rehabilitation of farm to market roads, among others.”

They  work for 10 to 30 days depending on the approved  program of work. They are paid the prevailing minimum wage and enrolled in  group micro-insurance with the Government Service Insurance System for social protection coverage.

Prior to their deployment,  workers were oriented on  workplace safety  health. They were also  given personal protection equipment.

DOLE 12  OIC Regional Director Albert Gutib said, of the 3,067 beneficiaries, 1,131  have already completed their  work  contract  on March  31.

Their  wages are being  processed, Director Gutib said.

Besides the aforementioned, 414 more individuals are  given  work via the  Government Internship Program (GIP). Their internship  lasts  3 to 6 months.

GIP is a component of the government’s Kabataan 2000 project under E.O. 139-1993.

It aims to provide opportunities for young workers to serve the general public through projects and services of government agencies and offices at both local and national level. (DEDoguiles-PIA 12  with report from DA 12)
