(Eagle News)– Another quake shook Leyte Monday morning, July 10, with a magnitude of 5.8, and according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), this is just a strong aftershock from last Thursday’s 6.5 magnitude earthquake.

PHIVOLCS Director Renato Solidum confirmed that the 5.4 quake felt in Leyte on Monday (July 10) morning was an aftershock of the July 6 quake with movement happening at the same fault line.

“Yung magnitude 5.4 kanina ay inaasahan po naming mangyari. Lahat po ng aftershock ay lindol. Ang mga lindol, kapag ang pinaggalingan at kasunod niya na malaking earthquake, in the same area, same fault ang kumilos, ay aftershock po yun,” Solidum said during a radio interview.

PHIVOLCS recorded the aftershock at 9:41 a.m., which struck some 13 kilometers southeast of Ormoc City. Its depth was recorded at three kilometers.

PHIVOLCS has recorded numerous aftershocks in Leyte since the July 6 earthquake but the 5.8 magnitude aftershock was so far the strongest of them.

Last Thursday’s shallow quake, with a depth of only two kilometers, was recorded 15 kilometers northeast of Ormoc City which felt it at intensity 7. It was felt at the same intensity in Kananga, Leyte.

Two people were killed and 72 were injured from the quake.
