6.2 magnitude quake rocks Surigao del Norte Friday night; aftershocks continue to be recorded

(Eagle News) – A magnitude 6.2 quake struck Surigao del Norte on Friday night, March 8, which was followed by several aftershocks that continued until Saturday, March 9, latest data from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) showed.

The quake struck at 11:06 p.m. on Friday, 39 kilometers northeast of Burgos town. It had a depth of 17 kilometers and was of tectonic origin.

The quake was felt at intensity 5 in the towns of Burgos, Dapa, Alegria, Bacuag, Claver, General Luna, Gigaquit, Pilar, Placer & San Benito, Surigao Del Norte; Surigao City; and San Jose, Dinagat.

It was felt at intensity 4 in Butuan City; Malimono, Surigao Del Norte; Tacloban City; Abuyog and Palo, Leyte; Anahawan, Hinunangan, Hinundayan, Limasawa, San Francisco, San Ricardo, San Juan, and Saint Bernard, Southern Leyte; and San Francisco, Agusan Del Norte.

It was also felt at intensity 3 in Gingoog City; Tandag City; Salcedo, Eastern Samar; and at intensity 2 in Bislig City; Cagayan De Oro City; Ormoc City; Mambajao and Mahinog, Camiguin.

As of Saturday afternoon, March 9, Phivolcs recorded 17 aftershocks with lower magnitudes in Surigao del Norte since the quake struck late Friday night. The latest aftershock was recorded at 4:26 p.m. with a magnitude of 2.5, also in Burgos town.
