6.6-magnitude quake hits Xinjiang

JINGHE COUNTY, China (CCTV) —  A 6.6-magnitude earthquake jolted Jinghe County on Wednesday following Tuesday’s strong earthquake in southwest China’s Sichuan Province, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC).

No casualties have been reported so far in the quake that took place at 07:27 in the Bortala Mongolian Autonomous Prefecture, northwest of China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

The epicenter was recorded at a point 44.27 degrees north latitude and 82.89 degrees east longitude, with the focus at a depth of 11 km, the center said in a statement.

Most people were sleeping when the quake struck.

The city’s hi-rises were shaking for about 10 seconds.

Surveillance video at a local supermarket showed commodities falling down from shelves.

Residents in the city of Kuitun, some 160 kilometers away from the epicenter, felt strong tremors.

A video recording showed a pendant lamp and a fish tank at a residential house shaking violently.

Many houses in Jinghe were seriously damaged by the quake, according to preliminary reports.

Xinjiang’s Jinghe County has a population of about 140,000.
