A STRONG earthquake aftershock hit India and Nepal on Sunday (April 26), shaking buildings in northern and eastern parts of India, and triggering an avalanche in the Himalayas.

The United States Geological Survey said the tremor was 6.7 magnitude, less than the 7.9 quake that struck the region on Saturday (April 25) killing more than 2,200 people.

People vacated offices and residential buildings and ran out in Lucknow city in northern Uttar Pradesh state.

“It was like yesterday. Though we will not be able to tell its magnitude, it was very strong. As we read in the newspapers today that for two to three days such jolts will be felt and people need to be cautioned,” said resident Ajay Sharma.

Tremors were also felt in the capital, New Delhi, and Patna city in eastern Bihar state, where 35 people lost their lives in Saturday’s earthquake.

“Yesterday we felt it and knew that it could come again so we were not that scared. We immediately vacated the house. But still the fear is there,” said another resident, Gopal, in Patna.

Nearly 800 Indians have been evacuated from Nepal with more on the way home, according to the Ministry of External Affairs. No Indian casualties have yet been reported in Nepal, but 49 have been reported killed in India. (Reuters)
