“Jason Bourne” tops weekend box office

Reuters — The latest film in the Bourne franchise, “Jason Bourne,” is soared to the top of the North American weekend box office from Friday (July 29) through Sunday (July 31) with the second largest opening in the franchise at $60 million.

The film stars Alicia Vikander, Tommy Lee Jones, and Matt Damon – who resumes his role as the former lethal CIA operative drawn out of the shadows. It is expected to take in more than 53 million dollars in its opening weekend.

Holding over from last week, “Star Trek Beyond” finished second with $24 million which is lower than expected and a 60 percent drop off from its opening. according to reports. The film has now earned $105 million in two weeks.

“Bad Moms,” which stars Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell, and Kathryn Hahn as three over-stressed moms who attempt to liberate themselves from their daily responsibilities came close to projections to finish third in the box office in its debut. The comedy from STX brought in $23.4 million.

“The Secret Life of Pets” took in $18 million in to bring its total domestic box ofice to $296 million in four weeks.

Rounding out the top five was Warner Bro’s lights out. The horror film is the first feature from director David F. Sandberg and has now earned $42.8 million in two weeks.
