HONG KONG, China (Reuters) — Social media video footage showed Typhoon Nida damaging houses and tearing down tree branches as it swept through Shek O, a beachside village in Hong Kong on Tuesday (August 2).

Twitter user Marianne Bray, a freelance journalist and journalism teacher at Hong Kong University, shared her videos with Reuters, showing strong winds at dawn and damage in the village where she lives.

Hong Kong’s first major typhoon this year brought gusts of more than 100 km per hour (62 miles per hour) after earlier making landfall in China’s Guangdong province and prompted the Hong Kong Observatory to issue an amber warning, signifying heavy rain, at 5:20 am Hong Kong time (2120 gmt).

Nida was moving gradually to inland areas of Guangdong and winds near its center were showing signs of weakening, according to the observatory.
