XIONGAN, China (CCTV) — China announced Saturday it would establish the Xiongan New Area in Hebei province, as part of measures to increase coordinated development in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region.

The New Area, which is about 100 kilometers southwest of downtown Beijing, will span three counties and sit at the center of the triangular area formed by Beijing, Tianjin, and Hebei’s provincial capital Shijiazhuang.

The area features a number of advantages including convenient transportation, well preserved ecosystem, abundant resources to sustain development and population.

The three counties, which are Anxin County, Rongcheng County, and Xiongxian County, are located from 108 to 162 km from Beijing.

Anxin County is the home of the biggest freshwater lake the Baiyangdian Lake in the north China plains.

Dubbed “north China’s kidney,” the 366 square kilometer-lake occupies nearly half of the county’s domain.

North of Anxin County is Rongcheng County, which sits in the middle of Beijing and Tianjin. It takes commuters only around one hour to travel from Rongcheng to Beijing and Tianjin.

Xiongxian County is northeast of Rongcheng, and is one of the three counties closest to Beijing.
