(Eagle News)– The camp of Janet Lim Napoles on Wednesday said they made a request to the Department of Justice (DOJ) to have her transferred to the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) detention center.
“Actually sumulat ako sa DOJ kahapon na kung pwede ilipat na siya kasi hindi na siya dapat doon dahil correctional ‘yun para sa mga convicted person. Ang request ko sa NBI [Actually we requested to DOJ yesterday if we can transfer her because it is not right for her to be detained there since it is a correctional for convicted persons. I requested that it should be at the NBI],” Atty. Stephen David, Napoles’ legal counsel, said in an interview at the Sandiganbayan.
His client was at the court to attend a graft case hearing in connection with her alleged involvement in the pork barrel scam.
She is also facing a plunder case in connection with that scam.
David explained that they wanted to transfer Napoles so that she could participate as a witness in the pork barrel scam probe if approved by the DOJ.
He clarified, however, that it was still up to the Sandiganbayan where Napoles should finally be detained.
“Dapat may court order talaga,” he said.
Napoles is currently detained inside the Correctional Institution for Women (CIW), Mandaluyong City in connection with the illegal detention case involving her former aide Benhur Luy.
The Court of Appeals on Monday, however, acquitted her in the said case and ordered her release.
Despite the release order, she will remain detained as she is still facing the other cases in connection with the pork barrel scam.
