QUEZON City, Philippines (Eagle News) — The Maute Group is continuing to lose ground in Marawi City.
Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Chief of Staff General Eduardo Año said that only a small part — about one to two square kilometers — of the city is under the control of the terrorist group.
The AFP records show that only 100 to 120 members of the Maute remain fighting on the ground.
In a report last week, the military’s Joint Task Force Marawi also said that they received reports that the Maute group is lacking ammunition and have little maneuver space.
“We have validated reports that there are leadership problems inside [the Maute group]. They also lack ammunition, they have limited maneuver space, which means that their funds are getting smaller,” Lt. Col. Jo-ar Herrera said.
He also said that the group has weakened.
“These are the things affecting [them]in terms of morale. They are weakening, they are weak. So these are the manifestations that they are losing. They are losing their ground especially the center of gravity,” he added.
