ASIAN volleyball competition opens to cheering crowd in Biñan, Laguna; PHL team off to good start

BIÑAN CITY, Laguna (Eagle News) – Players from countries in this side of the world are now gearing up for the 19th SMM Asian Senior Women’s Volleyball Championship, which was inaugurated to a cheering crowd in Laguna on Wednesday night.

Mayor Arman Dimaguila, Jr. and Vice Mayor Gel Alonte led the ceremonial toss before avid volleyball fans and athletes, who had flocked to the Alonte Sports Arena in Biñan to witness the occasion.

Ramon Suzara, president of the Philippine Sports League, and Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano also graced the opening day of the competition, which will see athletes from 14 nations  slug it out for a shot at the championship. 

Australia, China, Hongkong, Japan, Iran, Korea, Kazakhstan, Maldives, New Zealand, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Taiwan and Vietnam will be competing for the gold in the volleyball event that will last until Aug. 17.

The Philippine national women’s volleyball team was off to a good start, after they crushed the Hongkong team by winning all three consecutive sets.
