BOCA DEL CIELO, Chiapas, Mexico (CCTV) — Victims along the southern coast of Mexico are still dealing with devastating aftershocks from the 8.2-magnitude earthquake which hit the region last Thursday.
Julio Lopez is a fisherman living in a small fishing town, Boca del Cielo, in Chiapas.
His house was damaged by the earthquake, so he and his family are now staying in his friend’s home in Tonala.
As online rumors begin to spread about the devastating aftershocks, he and his family fear for the problems these may bring to their already severely damaged home.
“We are now a bit nervous, worrying about similar or stronger aftershocks which may happen at any time. Now, all of us rush out of the house when we feel just a little shake,” said Lopez.
His sister Lizbeth Lopez was living with their brother, who was buried by debris after the earthquake destroyed her home.
Though part of her house can still be used, Lizbeth no longer wants to feel the devastation of her brother’s death so she is now living in a shelter alone in Tonala.
“It’s really too sad. It is a severe trauma that I have been through. We have lived together for many years. He was my confidant, friend and a huge part of my life,” said Lizbeth.
