UPDATED: President Duterte signs into law measure postponing barangay, SK polls

(Eagle News) — President Rodrigo Duterte has signed into law the measure postponing the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections.

The President on Monday, October 2, signed Republic Act 10952 that amended RA 9164, and postponed the Oct. 23, 2017 polls to the second Monday of May 2018.

“Subsequent synchronized barangay and SK elections shall be held on the second Monday of May 2020 and every three years thereafter,” the amended portion of RA 9164 read.

The term of office of the barangay and SK officials elected in May 2020 shall now commence at noon of June 30 following their elections.

With the signing of RA 10952 into law,  the barangay officials who are ex-officio members of the municipal council, city council and provincial council shall now continue to serve until the next elections.

The law added the Liga ng mga Barangay at the municipal, city and provincial levels shall hold elections for the ex-officio positions in the councils under the supervision of the Department of the Interior and Local Government not later than July 31, 2018.

As such, the construction or maintenance of barangay-funded roads and bridges “shall be prohibited for a period of ten days immediately preceding the date of election…”
