(Eagle News) — The Supreme Court on Tuesday ordered the Senate to comment on the petition filed by alleged Aegis Juris fraternity leader Arvin Balag challenging his detention in the Upper House.
In a press briefing, SC spokesperson Theodore Te said the High Court was directing respondents to comment on Balag’s petition and application for a temporary restraining order “within a non-extendible period of 10 days upon receipt of this order.”
Senators ordered Balag’s detention after he repeatedly refused to answer whether he was indeed the leader of the Aegis Juris fraternity during a hearing into the hazing death of Horacio Castillo III.
On Monday, Senator Panfilo Lacson said he was inclined to release Balag but only before he found out the suspect in Castillo’s death had filed a petition before the Supreme Court.
Lacson said no one wanted to lose before the SC “by default.”
