NEW YORK City, United States (Reuters) — Entertainers, activists, a politician and an astronaut make up the list of Glamour magazine’s 27th annual women of the year.
On Monday (November 13) the U.S. publication recognized supermodel Gigi Hadid, actress Nicole Kidman, singer Solange Knowles, Congresswoman Maxine Waters and “Wonder Woman” director Patty Jenkins and others for achievements in their respective fields.
“It’s a huge honor, I mean it’s a lovely thing to be acknowledged with a group of women. But this is known to be such a powerful night, I can’t wait to hear the women speak and I can’t wait to see the other women up there on stage,” Kidman said.
Actress Drew Barrymore was on hand to present Kidman with her award and said the event is about the accomplishments and capabilities of women.
“For me this event is about the inside out, it’s about the accomplishments, it’s about the capabilities of women, what they’ve changed about the world. So for me that’s something I’m going to get behind always more than the sort of surface stuf,” she said.
Actress Linda Carter said “we’re celebrating our women-hood.”
“We have a voice and part of that – my husband stands with me, my son stands with me, my dad and we have a lot of great men that stand with us. Her (Patty Jenkins) husband, her son, you know, she’s got a male producer, this is not about women and men, it’s about some men, not all of them. So we’ve been fighting this fight a long time and I just – some of us just cannot believe we’re talking about the same things again, it’s kind of silly,” she added.
The night’s other honorees included the Women’s March Organizers, astronaut Peggy Whitson, late-night talk show host Samantha Bee, Syrian refugee turned education activist Muzoon Almellehan and Italian fashion designer Maria Grazia Chiuri.
