QUEZON CITY, Philippines (Eagle News) — Representative Reynaldo Umali, chair of the House Justice Committee, will meet with other members of the committee to discuss methods on how to fast-track the impeachment hearings against Chief Justice Ma. Lourdes Sereno.
“By next month, we will be able to terminate the hearings and submit for plenary approval our committee report by March. Maybe by May this is already with the Senate for trial. This is my personal timetable,” Umali said.
Umali also said that several associate justices of the Supreme Court are still scheduled to appear in the committee hearing.
“We are not rushing this especially since there are others who want to testify,” Umali said.
Umali stressed that they want to have strong evidence against Sereno in case Congress votes to impeach the Chief Justice
He also said that they don’t want to commit the same mistakes that the previous Congress committed when they voted to impeach then Chief Justice Renato Corona.
