(Eagle News) – Mayon volcano is now under alert level 4 because of more recent eruptions, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) which has now extended the six kilometer danger zone to eight kilometers.
Phivolcs director Renato Solidum Jr., advised the residents near the area to wear face masks, or be ready with wet handkerchiefs or cloths to protect themselves from the ashfall.
“We are advising the public not to panic, but to just be ready. Prepare gas masks just in case,” Solidum.
Albay Governor Al Francis Bichara immediately suspended classes in all levels in Albay.
He said the eruptions happened at around 1 p.m.
Before this, at 8 a.m., Phivolcs said Mayon Volcano was still under alert level 3, even though it noted that Mayon’s lava fountains had a significant increase in mass eruption rate.
“…Lava was observed to be flowing more voluminously than before, feeding the advancing Miisi lava flow anew and feeding two new lava flows on the Bonga Gully and upper Buyuan watershed,” Phivolcs said in its 8 a.m. bulletin.
