Bello: Kuwait has “informally accepted” MOU provisions for protection of OFWs

(Eagle News)– Kuwait has “informally accepted” the provisions aimed at protecting Overseas Filipino Workers in the Middle Eastern country.

In a radio interview on Wednesday, Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III said a Kuwaiti official was slated to come to the Philippines in order to finalize the Memorandum of Understanding containing the additional provisions.

According to Bello, the additional provisions would address OFW issues  involving their passports.

“Kaya meron ding provision na kapag inilipat sa isang employer, dapat may written consent yung ating overseas worker at merong written approval galing sa ating labor attache,” he added.

He said recruiters can face the revocation of their licenses if they don’t  ensure that these provisions are followed.

The labor department has imposed a total ban on the deployment of OFWs in Kuwait following  reported OFW abuses and the  death of Joanna Demafelis.

Demafelis was found in an abandoned freezer in an apartment in Kuwait.
