Lawyers’ group stage protest in front of SC to condemn Sereno ouster decision

(Eagle News) — A group of lawyers on Tuesday, May 15, staged a protest in front of the Supreme Court to condemn the high court’s decision to oust Maria Lourdes Sereno from the chief justice post.

Former Bayan Muna Representative Neri Colmenares, Atty. Edre Olalia and Free Legal Assistance Group chairman Jose Manuel Diokno joined the protest staged by the National Union of People’s Lawyer.

Protesters wore black armbands and held up black posters to condemn the alleged “unconstitutional” decision of the highest court.

They also condemned what they claimed was an attack on judicial independence and the alleged presence of authoritarianism in the country.

Actress Mae Paner also known as Juana Change joined the protest while dressed as the Lady Justice.
Around 20 protesters joined the protest in front of the gates of the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court on Friday, May 11 decided in favor of the quo warranto petition to remove Sereno from office. With a vote of 8-6, the high court also declared as vacant the Chief Justice position. (With a report from Moira Encina)
