Says not all barangay officials, however, should be armed
(Eagle News) — Senator Richard Gordon on Friday, June 29, expressed support for President Rodrigo Duterte’s proposal to arm barangay officials.
He said, however, that only those in areas with high crime rates, rebellion, or insurrection should be given the weapons so they could “protect themselves and their community.”
He added that those who were in the drug list or those who have criminal records should not be armed.
“May mga barangay officials din na sympathizers din ng mga leftist rebels o ng mga terrorist groups kaya hindi pwedeng lahat aarmasan,” he added.
According to Gordon, the barangay officials who will be armed will also have to undergo all processes to legally acquire a license.
“Gaya ng pagkuha ng neuro-psychiatric examination, pag-undergo sa gun seminars, at iba pang patakaran para masiguro na magiging responsible ang mga aarmahan,” he said, adding that the government should also be able to “strictly monitor the distribution and disposition of those guns.”
