(Eagle News) — President Rodrigo Duterte has no plans of staying in office “a second longer” after his term expires in 2022.
This is according to Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque, who issued a statement after Julio Teehankee, chair of the Constitutional Commission’s sub-panel on political reforms, said Duterte and Vice President Leni Robredo were allowed to seek reelection under a proposed federal government.
The Con-Com is tasked to review the 1987 Constitution.
“(The President) has repeatedly said: not a second beyond his term in 2022.. He has said what he said: not a second longer,” Roque said in a text message.
Roque echoed President Duterte’s repeated statements he would not extend his term as president.
Duterte has said he would step down as soon as a federal system of government was in place.
He said the type of government would solve the problems besetting Mindanao.
