(Eagle News)– A group allegedly composed of academics has expressed its opposition to amending the Constitution via a constitutional assembly.
In a statement on Wednesday, the Professors for Peace said a more participatory approach that includes people from “all walks of life” should be resorted to in amending the Charter for the shift to a federal form of government.
It clarified that some of its members supported federalism, others did not.
Under a Con-ass, only members of Congress can effect changes to the Constitution.
The other two modes of changing the Charter are a constitutional convention, under which elected delegates make the changes, and a people’s initiative where at least 12 percent of the number of registered voters is required for a petition for the changes to push through.
The group noted that 80 percent of Congress were from political dynasties, which meant there was a “deep conflict of interest” if they made the changes to the Charter.
” It is a national discourse that must allay fears, clarify concerns and bring us all towards common ground,” the group said.
