PSA reports decline in PHL unemployment rate in July

(Eagle News) — The Philippine Statistics Authority on Wednesday, Sept. 5, reported a 5.4 percent unemployment rate in July.

This was a 0.2 percent decrease from the unemployment rate in July 2017, based on records from the PSA.

According to the PSA, the regions with the lowest employment rates were Ilocos Region (93.5%), Central Luzon (93.7%), CALABARZON (93.7%), Bicol Region (93.7%), and the National Capital Region (NCR) (93.9%).

The PSA pegged labor force participation rate in July 2018 at 60.1 percent, a decrease of 0.5 percent from July 2017.

“The labor force population consists of the employed and the unemployed 15 years old and over,” the PSA said.

According to the PSA, workers in the services sector comprised the largest proportion of the population who are employed.  T

It said these workers made up 57.5 percent of the total employed in July 2018.

“Among them, those engaged in the wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles accounted for the largest percentage (33.4%) of workers in the services sector,” the PSA said.

The PSA said in July 2017, “workers in the services sector accounted for 55.6 percent of the total employed, with those engaged in the wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles making up the largest proportion (33.9%) of workers.”
