MANILA, May 9 (PNA) – A magnitude-5.7 earthquake jolted the province of Davao Occidental on Friday afternoon, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).
In its bulletin, the agency said the tremor occurred at 1:44 p.m. with its epicenter traced 31 kilometers southeast of Sarangani, Davao Occidental.
Phivolcs said the temblor, which was tectonic in origin, had a shallow depth of 113 kilometers.
The agency said that Davao City and Mati City in Davao Oriental felt the tremor at Intensity 4.
Phivolcs described an Intensity 4 quake as moderately strong and is felt generally by people indoors and by some people outdoors. Light sleepers are awakened.
It causes vibration like the “passing of a heavy truck;” hanging objects swing considerably; dinner plates, glasses, windows and doors rattle while floors and walls of wood framed-buildings creak. Standing motor cars may rock slightly.
Intensity 3 was recorded in Bislig, Surigao del Sur, and Tagum City, Davao del Norte; and Intensity 1 in Gingoog City, Misamis Oriental.
Phivolcs said there was no casualty or damage reported from the quake.
The agency said people in the affected areas can expect aftershocks.
