(Eagle News)–The Presidential Communications and Operations Office has hailed Carlos Yulo for his “truly historic” win at the 49th FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships.
In a statement, Communications Secretary Martin Andanar said the 19-year-old has not only made his country proud by being the first Filipino to win a gold medal in the event but also made the sport of gymnastics in the Philippines proud.
“We expect great things from this talented young man at the upcoming 2020 Tokyo Olympics,” Andanar said.
During Saturday’s competition, Yulo brought home the gold with a 0.1 winning margin over silver medallist Artem Dolgopyat of Israel–15.3 vis à vis 15.2.
China’s Xiao Ruoteng claimed the bronze medal with 14.933 points.
Yulo is also the first male Southeast Asian gymnast to win a gold at the world competition.
