Suspect in police custody: QC gov’t
(Eagle News)–Three people were killed in a shooting incident in Ateneo de Manila University in Quezon City on Sunday.
The Quezon City government identified the fatalities as Rosita Furigay, former mayor of Lamitan; one Ateneo security guard identified by The Guidon as Jeneven Bandiala; Furigay’s aide identified as Victor Capistrano.
Also injured was Furigay’s daughter who is currently undergoing treatment in the hospital.
The shooting took place before the 2022 Ateneo law commencement exercises were supposed to take place, Ateneo said in one of its statements issued after the incident.
According to the authorities, Furigay’s daughter was supposed to attend the rites.
“We strongly denounce the shooting incident at the Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) that occurred Sunday afternoon. This kind of incident has no place in our society and must be condemned to the highest level,” QC Mayor Joy Belmonte said, as she extended her condolences to the families of those who were killed.
She said the suspect, identified as Dr. Chao-Tiao Yumol, 38, of Lamitan, was in police custody.
The QCPD later said that Yumol’s motive for the shooting was personal.
The police said he was facing several cyber libel cases filed by the Furigay camp.
Belmonte gave the assurance the local government would “further strengthen security and other measures..” with the State of the Nation Address (SONA) set to take place on Monday.
Ateneo law commencement rites cancelled
Supreme Court spokesperson Brian Hosaka said Chief Justice Alexander Gesmundo was supposed to be the guest speaker in the Ateneo Law School Graduation rites.
“He was still in transit when the shooting happened and was advised to turn back,” Hosaka said.
“The Chief Justice is safe,” he added.
In a Tweet, the university said because of the incident at Areté, the 2022 Commencement Exercises of the Ateneo Law School have been cancelled.
“Ateneo is continuing to work with the police and other authorities to deal with the incident,” the university said.
