Says volcano has entered period of “low-level unrest”
(Eagle News)–The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology has raised the alert level of Bulusan volcano.
In an advisory, PHIVOLCS said the alert level was raised to 1 after it entered a period of “low-level unrest” with its sustained volcanic earthquakes that began on Oct. 14.
Since then, PHIVOLCS said a total of 121 volcanic earthquakes have been detected.
Of these, it said 37 were volcano-tectonic quakes associated with rock fracturing processes.
A notable increase of volcanic carbon dioxide concentrations was also observed from June to August.
“These parameters indicate that hydrothermal activity driven by deep-seated magma degassing may be occurring beneath the volcano and may lead to steam-driven eruptions at any of its summit vents,” PHIVOLCS said.
