JUNE 19 (Reuters) — It’s going to be a relaxing weekend for families as two coming-of-age stories hit the big screen beginning Friday (June 18).
Pixar’s original animation movie “Inside Out” is set inside an 11-year-old girls’ mind and features personified emotions voiced by the likes of Amy Poehler and Mindy Kaling. Directed by Pete Docter, who also whelmed the Oscar-winning film “Up,” “Inside Out” is predicted to earn $70 million this weekend. The reviews considered it another masterpiece from Pixar after years of sequels. Time wrote, “It defies the conventions of family movies.” And Forbes called it “a gloriously imaginative rebuttal to anyone who would claim that Pixar’s best days are behind it.”
“Dope” also opens this Friday. Directed by Rick Famuyiwa, “Dope” is one of this year’s Sundance favorites with its stereotype-breaking black nerd story. “Dope” earned mixed reviews. Time wrote, “Dope mixes constant comic energy with a sense of genuine threat to its enterprising hero.” The New York Post was less impressed, saying “it’s not that funny as a comedy,” also saying, “it’s raggedly plotted, with ridiculous coincidences popping up everywhere.” “Dope” is estimated to make $7.9 million box office in its opening weekend.
With $208.8 million earned during it’s opening weekend, “Jurassic World” is estimated to add $91.2 million to its global take of $594 million, giving it the top spot of the box office.
Holding over from previous weeks, “Spy” should see another $10 million added to its global take of $118 million and “San Andreas” is expected to earn another $5.6 million to its worldwide box office of $376 million.
