The Department of Transportation and Communications said that the prototype train of the Metro Rail Transit 3 (MRT-3) has arrived in the country from China.

The prototype, which arrived Friday, Aug. 14, will be assemble here, while its components such as doors, seats, poles and hand straps would undergo testing in November.

DOTC said this is only the first of the 48 brand-new train cars that will be delivered starting first quarter of 2016.

DOTC spokesperson Miguel Arthur Sagcal earlier said that once all 48 train cars are delivered, the three-train car sets will be made four-train car sets — the maximum length allowed by platforms.

In a report by the Philippine News Agency (PNA), it said that DOTC Joseph Emilio Abaya has assured that new train cars would mean lesser maintenance requirements in the future.

It said the assembly is expected to take place by the end of August.
