Trailer of movie on Vincent Van Gogh gets 9.2 million views

GDANSK, POMERANIAN, POLAND (Reuters) — A video trailer for an animated movie entitled “Loving Vincent” has become an internet hit gaining almost 10 million views on social media since it was first uploaded on February 26, 2016.

The trailer shows a set of scenes from the life of the artist Vincent Van Gogh animated in the style of his paintings.

The movie was produced out of Gdansk, Poland by a production company called ‘Breakthru films’.

The remarkable effect seen in the trailer is done through artists individually painting the filmed scenes onto canvas in the style of Van Gogh.

Scenes from the movie was first shot with the cast and then recreated on canvas by production artists.

Sylwia Piekarska from Breakthru films told Reuters that the number of artists working on the project is currently 68, but will soon increase to 85 as the crew aim to finish the film by the autumn of 2016.

Piekarska told Reuters that “Loving Vincent” will be the first fully painted feature film in the world.

She also said that the team of painters ended up producing 1400 unique paintings during the production.

The movie director and one of the script writers, Dorot Kobiela came up with the idea for the movie. Kobiela was studied fine art and had a keen interest in animation, the combination of these factors and the words of Van Gogh himself “We can only speak through our paintings”, sparked the idea to animate his work and tell his story.

The film will star Oscar nominated actress Saoirse Ronan, Chris O’Dowd and Aidan Turner and is due to be released in 2016.
