Tata Motors eyes setup of factory in Philippines

THe local unit of Indian auto-maker Tata Motors Ltd., has expressed interest in putting up a factory in the country to take advantage of the increase in demand for its vehicles.

At the sidelines of the “Philippines and India: Partners in Progress” forum, Philippine-India Business Council (PIBC) president Johnny Chotrani said the company was encouraged by the Filipinos’ interest in the Indian brand.

Currently, all Tata vehicles sold in the Philippines are imported from India.

Chotrani said the possible establishment of manufacturing operations will be done through the Pilipinas Taj Autogroup Inc. (TAJ), its official distributor in the country.

While no timeline has been set or confirmed by the local partner, the decision on whether the automaker will be setting up manufacturing operations will be made in two years’ time.

Tata motors Ltd., is India’s largest automobile company, with consolidated revenues of $34.7 billion in 2012 to 2013, according to its web site.
