Reuters – A six-storey building under construction collapsed in Uganda’s capital Kampala on Monday, leaving at least one dead.

Seven people have so far been taken out from the rubble. The injured have been rushed to hospitals around Kampala.

An unknown number of people are believed to be still trapped underneath the rubble. Some of the trapped have made phone calls to their family members and friends.

A witness Hope Erumana describes the incident: “What has happened today! I have become so sympathetic. Because people are building just within two months, flats just go up. They are ever building night and day.”

The rescue operation is still going on.

Local police spokesperson Patrick Onyango talks about the rescue and probe into the cause of the collapse: “The rescue operation is still going on. I cannot say what caused this because that is the work of the technical people who are going to do the investigation, who are going to do a thorough, thorough investigation, but as we speak now, we have begun the operation which might take us days.”

It is still not clear what has caused the collapse.

But the basement of the partly-finished building is being taken up by restaurants, shops and other businesses. The building is close to Kampala’s main university
