Reuters — Colorful jellyfish were captured on camera at a depth of 3,700 meters (12,139 feet) on April 24 in waters off south-east Asia.
Stunning footage showed two luminous creatures swimming in the dark waters around the Marianas Trench Marine National Monument, east of the Philippines.
The footage was captured by a remotely operated vehicle “Deep Discoverer” which holds 20 LED lights and nine video cameras.
In an operation running from April 20 to July 10, researchers are studying the sea floor in the area.
Mud volcanoes, deep-sea coral and creatures are all the subjects of their work.
Despite decades of study in the region, it stills holds many unexplored areas, the NOAA said.
The jellyfish recorded in the underwater footage are of the Crossota genus, NOAA oceanographer and jellyfish expert Michael Ford stated.
The animals are not rare and similar types have been seen before off the coast off Puerto Rico in the Atlantic Ocean, he added.
