Despite achieving its “zero casualties” goal, Albay government mulls declaring a state of calamity.
Albay Governor Joey Salceda said this is due to the massive effects of typhoon Nona to agriculture and infrastructure in the province. Salceda cited the collapse of sea walls in the eastern and western seaboards of Albay and the destruction of houses near the coast.
Officials are still assessing the amount of damage from the typhoon, but the initial estimate on the damage to high value crops is pegged at 39.74 million pesos.
Salceda will meet with the provincial disaster risk reduction and management council this afternoon and the local government hopes to decide within the day if a state of calamity will be declared. (Eagle News Service)
