(Eagle News) — Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez has proposed the creation of a “United Nations of Asia” that he said would protect the interests of Asian nations.

Alvarez made the proposal in a radio interview on Wednesday night, after slamming the United States for its intelligence group’s report that cited President Rodrigo Duterte’s war on drugs and pronouncements on a revolutionary government and a nationwide martial law as “regional threats.”

“Ngayon, ang para sa akin, ang proposal ko, dito na lang tayo sa Asya – United Nations of Asia, ‘di ba? At mapangalagaan natin ‘yung interest natin dito sa Asya,” he said.

He said Asian countries “do not need Western nations to interfere” in their affairs.

“..Dahil unang-una, ‘yung ekonomiya naman nila ay pabagsak na nga. Umaasa na lang sila sa ekonomiya ng Asya,” he said.

Alvarez said in light of this, the United Nations, which he said was a “useless” body, should be abolished.

“Kayang-kaya nating pangalagaan ‘yan. hindi natin kailangan ng Amerika diyan o kung ano pang mga western countries,” he said.

In its report on Feb. 13, the US Intelligence Group also called Hun Sen’s alleged repression of democratic institutions, and the Rohingya crisis  as “regional threats.”

It also expressed concerns over Thailand’s announcement of the conduct of new elections, claiming this could pave the way for “further militarization.”
