Anak TV will re-launch Larolympics on Saturday at 8 AM, April 25 at the Angono Lakeside Park to usher a season of street games to be held in different cities and municipalities. The friendly community derbies aim to promote good health among the youth and revive the dying games of our culture.
The incidence of obesity and poor nutrition among Filipino kids is rising. Parents and pediatricians blame the bombardment of fast food messages in media. Others pin the blame on the long hours a child spends in front of a media screen.
The childhood games we played are lost on today’s generation because: 1. The streets are too choked with motor traffic and pollution. 2. Today’s schools demand more hours of homework. 3. Kids are too hooked on media and would not go out to play. 4. Screen time and media consumption eat up most of a child’s hours.
Larolympics will feature games with a developmental twist. Youth of all ages, including those out of school and differently abled, are encouraged to participate. Piko enjoins boys and girls to focus on their ambitions in life. In Tumbang Preso, the players attempt to pin down a can that represents vices. Children’s rights are inscribed in Patintero lines which players guard zealously.
The April 25 launch is hosted by Mayor Gerry Calderon in cooperation with the various TV network members of Anak TV. Among the endorsers of Larolympics are IOC member and equestrienne Mikee Cojuangco Jaworski and actor Ricky Davao, Makabata stars Anne Curtis, Marian Rivera, Angel Locsin, Kim Atienza, Dingdong Dantes, Mike Enriquez, Ted Failon and Boy Abunda among many others.
Larolympics is a major undertaking of Anak TV as it marks its 18th year. The derbies were started in 2009 and played in the country’s most child friendly cities.
