Apolinario Mabini trended in the Philippines in the 8th spot today, as people reacted to the ridiculous question of some college students who watched “Heneral Luna” – “Why is Mabini not standing?” — which clearly showed the lack of understanding of Philippine history of the new generation.
The actor Epy Quizon who portrayed Mabini in the film was saddened as some college students asked him about his character in the story not seen standing in the entire movie. Epy replied in his page asking the students, if they know who Apolinario Mabini was.
This simple yet alarming question rocked that entire social media with people expressing disappointment that the youth seemed to lack enough knowledge about the country’s history, including its historical figures.
But the issue, divided history instructors on whether or not to dwell or not on small personal details about historical figures. Some believed that Mabini’s condition as a paralytic need not to be taught in school. Others said that more history professors should encourage students to be interested in the nation’s history, and read up more on the country’s heroes. (Eagle News Service)
