First, it was the U.S. government asking Apple for help in accessing an iPhone. Now, it could be Apple urging the government to show its hand – in a similar legal case in Brooklyn, New York. A source says Apple could use legal discovery to force the FBI to show how it accessed the phone of the shooter in San Bernardino if Justice officials continue to compel Apple to help unlock an iPhone in a Brooklyn drug case.
So far, prosecutors are mum over whether the technique developed by a third party used in the San Bernardino case would work with other seized iPhones like the one in Brooklyn. Authorities want answers: in Louisiana, East Baton Rouge district attorney Hillar Moore III said, “Eventually, we would like to know: is this technology available to us, or is the third party going to sell it, and how much would it cost?”
The government says it’ll update the court by April 11 on whether it would “modify” its request for Apple’s assistance.
