Are you sweet? Tips for lowering your blood sugar

QUEZON City, Philippines (Eagle News Service, June 18) – Did you know that if you have high blood sugar that you are already considered pre-diabetic? Pre-diabetes is a condition where you have a high blood sugar but not as high as those with diabetes.

But don’t fret since studies show that just by eating certain types of food, you can lower your blood sugar levels.

1. Cinnamon. This spice is a potent when it comes to reducing blood sugar. The same for cinnamon extracts. There are many kinds of cinnamon out there so be sure to consult your doctor before using it as a regular supplement to your diet.

2. Garlic. You may already know that garlic helps lower cholesterol levels. But this bulb of wonder also works for high blood sugar as well. Garlic is rich in insulin so forget about the bad breath and put extra garlic in your food. Studies say that onion also share the same benefit.

3. Avocado and nuts. Avocados are rich in monounsaturated fatty acids which improve fasting and average blood glucose. Other food rich in monounsaturated fatty acids are nuts and seeds, olives and olive oil.

4. Blueberries. Blueberries are the biggest source of anthrocyanins which improves insulin sensitivity as well as inhibiting certain digestive enzymes which prevents spikes of blood sugar after eating starch-rich diet. Other food rich in anthrocynanin includes blackberries, tea, honey, wine and chocolate.

5. Cherry. Insulin resistance prevents insulin to do its job properly, which is to lower blood sugar. Eating cherries can help lower insulin resistance.

6. Vinegar. The acetic acid in vinegar reduces certain enzymes in the stomach which reduces sugar spikes after eating starch-rich food.

7. Coffee. Increasing your daily coffee intake by a cup reduces the risk of type 2 diabetes by 10%.
