GOODWIN, ARIZONA, United States (Reuters) — A wildfire burning in Arizona’s Prescott National Forest has burned more than four thousand acres, forcing families to evacuate their homes.
The Goodwin Fire is only five percent contained as of Tuesday afternoon (June 27).
Forest officials say the fire is burning through heavy brush and timber in rugged terrain and windy conditions are spreading the flames.
The Yavapai County Sheriff’s office is working with fire officials to evacuate some areas.
They’re also warning residents nearby to be prepared to evacuate if needed.
Some structures have been burned or destroyed, but investigators aren’t able to get close enought to determine details of the extent of the damage.
The terrain makes the fire difficult to fight, so fire officials are warning firefighters that nothing is worth risking injury.
Investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the fire.
