ASEAN and India to strengthen maritime defense

(Eagle News) — The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and India  have agreed to strengthen maritime security defense cooperation.

“India shares ASEAN’s vision through rule-based order for the oceans and seas. Respect for international laws, notably the UNCLOS is critical for this. We remain committed with ASEAN for cooperation in maritime area,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, referring to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Seas.

According to the Indian Foreign Affairs Ministry, an agreement would ensure freedom of navigation and cooperation in the South China Sea.

Modi also noted that humanitarian and disaster relief efforts will be other key  points for maritime cooperation.

“India shares the ASEAN vision for rule-based societies and values of peace. We are committed to working with ASEAN nations to enhance collaboration in the maritime domain. It highlights the importance of our strategic partnership placing ASEAN at the center of India’s Act East Policy. Our friendship has been nurtured by our shared culture and civilization linkages,” Modi said.
