AT least 36 passengers of a ferry carrying 189 passengers and crew were killed when the boat capsized minutes after leaving the port of Ormoc on Thursday.
Many on board the motorized outrigger MBCA Kim-Nirvana, which had 173 passengers and 16 crew onboard, were rescued by the coastguard and police.
According to Philippine Coastguard spokesman Armand Balilo, 127 people survived the ferry accident, but 26 were still listed as missing.
Authorities are still investigating the cause of the accident. There was only light rain at the time of the incident, but there were big waves. At least one witness said he saw the ferry make a sharp turn just before it capsized.
