Authorities now monitoring tropical depression outside PAR

Gorio expected to leave PAR on Monday

(Eagle News) — Authorities are monitoring another tropical depression outside the Philippine area of responsibility, as Severe Tropical Storm Gorio continued to enhance the southwest monsoon, triggering rains in several parts of the country.

According to Obet Badrina, Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration weather forecaster, they were monitoring the weather system even if there was a “small chance” it would enter the PAR.

“Itong dalawang weather systems na ito, Severe Tropical Storm Gorio at tropical depression, ay nagtutulong tulong na palakasin ang epekto ng hanging habagat (southwest monsoon),” he said in a press conference around 11 p.m.

He said as of 10 p.m., Gorio was seen 555 kilometers east of Tuguegarao, packing maximum winds of 90 kilometers per hour, and a gust of 115 kilometers per hour.

He said Gorio, which has little chances of hitting a landmass, was expected to leave PAR on Sunday.

In the meantime, signal number one is still hoisted over Batanes, which should expect winds of 30 to 60 kilometers per hour.

Light, moderate and even heavy rains are expected tomorrow, July 28.

He said these would be “concentrated” from dawn to early morning.

“Tapos may pagkakataon na titila, pagdating ng gabi, may pag-ulan uli. Ganyan ho ang epekto ng hanging habagat,” he said.

He said on Saturday, the effects of the southwest monsoon will still be seen.

As Sunday progresses, he said the weather was expected to get better even though rains are still expected in the morning.

“Monday medyo mas gaganda na ang panahon  natin kung hindi magbabago ang track ni Gorio, partikular na sa Kamaynilaan at malaking bahagi ng Luzon,” he said.
