(Eagle News) – The government of Bahrain has given the assurance Overseas Filipino Workers in the Arab state were protected.
This is according to Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano, who issued a statement on Monday, May 14.
According to Cayetano, in a meeting with Bahrain Prime Minister Khalifa Bin Salman Al Khalifa at the Gudaibiya Palace on Sunday, May 13, Khalifa also “reiterated his government’s support for the Philippines..”
“The Prime Minister informed us about a number of initiatives that Bahrain is taking to further protect the rights and promote the welfare of Filipinos and other expatriate workers,” Cayetano said.
Cayetano said that the Prime Minister also commended the 60,000 Filipinos working in the Kingdom and reiterated his government’s readiness to receive more.
Cayetano also met with Crown Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa and Foreign Minister Sheikh Khalid bin Ahmed Al-Khalifa during his two-day official visit to Manama, where he said they gave the assurance they would support Manila’s “efforts to counter violent extremism and forge economic partnership.”
“The Crown Prince also expressed admiration for President (Rodrigo) Duterte’s strong and decisive action in fighting terrorism in Marawi,” Cayetano added.
On Friday, May 11, the Philippines and Kuwait signed the Agreement on the Employment of Domestic Workers that aims to ensure the protection of OFWs in the Gulf state.
