(Eagle News) — Martial law will not solve the country’s problems.
Senator Bam Aquino had this to say on Friday, Sept. 21, as some sectors geared up to commemorate the 46th anniversary of the declaration of martial law during then-President Ferdinand Marcos’ time.
“Ngayong nauulit ang bangungot ng nakaraan, oras na para magising sa katotohanan na kailanman, hindi sagot ang martial law sa problema ng bayan,” the senator, whose uncle, Ninoy Aquino, was a political rival of Marcos, said in a statement.
In Filipino, Aquino also urged everyone to “set aside politics and prioritize the country first.”
“Pagkakaisa, pagtutulungan ang kailangan,” he said.
Martial law has been in place in Mindanao since terrorists linked to the Islamic State overran Marawi last year.
The military defeated the local terrorists, but has recommended, together with the police, the continued implementation of martial law in Mindanao to ensure peace and order.
The declaration of martial law there is set to lapse in December.
