Barangay tanods involved in “misencounter” placed under preventive suspension

(Eagle News)– Mandaluyong City Mayor Carmelita Abalos on Friday ordered the preventive suspension of barangay tanods in the misencounter in Mandaluyong that left two people dead.

Abalos also questioned why the tanod were even armed in the first place.

“Their duty is not to fire shots to anyone but to immediately report the incident to police officers for the conduct of an immediate and legitimate police operation,” she said, ordering the confiscation of the firearms.

She also ordered the barangay chair to submit a  report on the matter within 24 hours.

“This hapless incident should not have happened. Nonetheless, this serves as a reminder that there are existing laws and non compliance therewith shall result to the imposition of sanctions to erring individuals,” she said.

Earlier, the chief of police and several other policemen from the police community precinct 1 were relieved after they shot at a vehicle they thought were carrying suspects in shooting incident in the city earlier.

The policemen shot at the Mitsubishi Adventure carrying the woman who was shot by an LPG delivery boy based on information given by the tanods.
