(Eagle News) — The father of the Maute brothers believed responsible for the terrorist attack in Marawi that prompted President Rodrigo Duterte to declare martial law in Mindanao is dead.

According to Senior Insp. Xavier Solda,  Bureau of Jail Management and Penology spokesperson, Cayamora Maute passed away in the Taguig-Pateros hospital today.

He said the Maute group patriarch, who was detained for criminal charges in Camp Bagong Diwa, had been rushed to the hospital past 3 p.m. after he had difficulty breathing, his pulse went down, and his blood pressure shot up.

“Bago pa nakulong si Cayamora, mayroon na itong sakit na hepatitis, diabetes at hypertension,” Solda said in a radio interview.

He said Maute’s body has been turned over to his kin, who plan to bring it to Quiapo.

Maute,   his second wife Kongan Balawag,  daughter Norjanah Maute,  and son-in-law Benzarali Tingao were arrested at a Davao checkpoint in June.
