(Eagle News) — Bureau of Corrections Director Benjamin delos Santos announced his resignation on Thursday, a day after President Rodrigo Duterte admitted there was a resurgence in the drug trade in the New Bilibid Prison.
In a statement, Delos Santos said the “issue about the resurgence has made me irrelevant.”
As such, he said his “irrevocable resignation effective immediately” was filed through the Secretary of Justice.
“I will refrain from further comments and take the vow of silence,” he said.
On Wednesday, Duterte said some inmates in the national penitentiary again had access to cellphones, which made it possible for them to run their drug businesses even from the inside.
He said he would institute reforms as soon as the conflict in Marawi was over.
