MANILA, Philippines — President Aquino officially appointed Rebecca Calzado as the new OWWA chief, at the same time also naming four new ambassadors.

Calzado’s appointment was announced Friday (June 6) by deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte at a press briefing in Malacañang.

She replaced Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) administrator Carmelita Dimzon who decided to leave the agency.

Dimzon retired from government service after turning 65, the mandatory retirement age for government workers and officials, last May 30.  She had already served more than three decades in the government service.

Calzado, 59, previously served as labor undersecretary and deputy executive director IV at the National Wages and Productivity Commission.

Aside from Calzado, President Aquino also nominated the following to serve as Philippine ambassadors: Domingo Nolasco (Italy), Wilfredo Santos (Qatar), Melita Sta. Maria Thomeczek (Germany), and Nathaniel Imperial (Israel).

Also appointed was Reydeluz Conferido  as Department of Labor and Employment undersecretary, replacing Danilo Cruz.

Other appointees include five new members to the Professional Regulatory Board of Nursing under the Professional Regulatory Commission: Gloria Arcos, Carmelita Divinagracia, Carfredda Dumlao, Florence Cawaon and Glenda Arquiza.  They will serve for three years.

The President signed the appointment papers last May 30, said Valte.
