(Eagle News) — Leaders from other countries have begun arriving in the Philippines in time for the 31st Association of Southeast Asian Nations Summit and Related Meetings.
Prime Minister of Cambodia Hun Sen was the first leader to arrive, his plane landing at the Clark International Airport in Pampanga at 1:26 p.m.
He was welcomed by Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana and Rep. Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.
Myanmar State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi arrived minutes later.
She just came from a meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit in Da Nang, Vietnam.
The Cambodian prime minister, who assumed the position when he was only 32 years old, is a close ally of China, which is of late having warmer relations with the Philippines since President Rodrigo Duterte assumed power.
Suu Kyi, a Nobel Laureate, has come under fire for her alleged failure to arrest the persecution of Rohingya in Myanmar.
Duterte at one point criticized Suu Kyi for this.
